Researchers propose Zcash-style private Bitcoin transfers without a soft fork

Researchers have proposed enabling Zcash-style private transfers on Bitcoin through an overlay protocol, avoiding changes to Bitcoin’s consensus rules or a soft fork. The approach would use zero-knowledge proofs and off-chain infrastructure to conceal transaction details while ultimately settling on Bitcoin. Its feasibility depends on wallet and ecosystem adoption, trusted setup or cryptographic assumptions, and acceptable trade-offs involving scalability, usability, and regulatory scrutiny.
