Bitcoin now has a quantum computing escape route, but 7 million BTC may still be exposed

Researchers and developers demonstrated a viable escape route from quantum threats by completing the first quantum-resistant Bitcoin transaction using post-quantum signature technology. At the same time, analysts estimate about 7 million BTC remain exposed because many existing UTXOs and legacy addresses reveal public keys or rely on non-quantum-resistant schemes. The consensus is that although a technical fix exists, Bitcoin’s safety against a future powerful quantum computer hinges on rapid adoption of post-quantum keys and active migration of at-risk funds; without those actions, exposed coins could be vulnerable to theft.
